Bpd treatment Perth

Hi. I hope have chosen the right forum. My daughter is 21 and has been living back at home with my sister and I for about a year since she was released from a clinic where she received a diagnosis of BPD, CPTSD, depression and anxiety. Previously, she was working full time and living out of home although she has had mental health issues since she was 13/14.  While she has tried both studying and working since her first admission, she has been unable to continue and she is now looking at applying for the disability pension while she continues treatment.

She has been back to the clinic several times and has completed their CBT and DBT group courses. She was seeing a psychologist for her cptsd using emdr treatment which was beneficial to a degree. We are looking for a new psychologist in perth who specialises in other bpd treatments such as schema therapy. Does any one have any recommendations for an affordable psychologist in Perth? I would also like to hear from any one else who may be able to offer insight whether it's a carer of someone with bpd or someone on their own journey.

I have signed on to the waiting list for a BPD carers course as I think I need more guidance in how to help my daughter as I feel that I'm not doing it properly. I found that the carers sessions of the cbt and dbt group sessions were only helpful in a greater understanding of my daughter rather than how I can effectively help her.

Thank you

Re: Bpd treatment Perth

HI @Rp79,

Welcome to the Forums. My name is FloatingFeather and I am one of the peer support workers at SANE. Thank you for sharing part of your story with us. It sounds like you things have been pretty challenging for your daughter and yourself for some time now. It speaks a lot about your daughter that despite what she was going through she still tried to work and study - that would have been really challenging. It sounds like it might be a good idea for her to just focus on her wellness for the time being and worry about study and work later. Like I tell my own kids work and study will always be there when they are ready.

This is a link to the Australian Association of Psychologists which may help you find a psychologist that specialises in what your daughter needs in your area AAPI

As a carer for someone with a serious mental health issue (not BPD) I understand and empathise with how you might be feeling. It is hard to watch a loved one struggle. I am a fixer by nature and if I could make everything better I would but unfortunately I can't. As carers we can only do our best and support our loved ones as much as we can but we also need to be mindful of our needs. This is a link to some more information around carers that may be of use family and carers

I have also added a link to more information around BPD and links to more information on the Forums around BPD to help get you started BPD, BPD chat. I will also tag a few lovely people at the bottom of this post that may be able to help.

I really wish you and your daughter all the best - your daughter is lucky to have a parent that cares so much 🙂.

On an aside here are a couple of tips to help you navigate the Forums a little better:

Tip 1 - if you want to directly chat with someone on the Forums use the @ symbol and then start typing their name directly after it. A dropdown box should appear, and you then select their name. This ensures that they are notified of any posts you mention them in.

Tip 2 – the most recent posts are the latest page numbers.

Warm wishes,

FloatingFeather

@FloatingFeather

Thanks for all the information. It's very much appreciated. My daughter has a long road ahead of her and I really want to help as much as possible. And having support of people who understand the struggles of both the patient and the carer makes such a difference.

And thanks for the tips. I struggled to try and figure out to even post.

I had a quick look to see if I could find a suitable psychologist but no luck on the site you linked me to. But I'll keep looking.

Thanks again

@tyme

Thank you for links. I will have a look at them all

Re: Bpd treatment Perth

Hi @Rp79 ,

Another site I just looked at is Spectrum: https://www.spectrumbpd.com.au/resources-and-support/for-carers

This will provide links to carers' forums etc. Once in a while, they also hold sessions for families which is booked through Spectrum's Eventbrite. These sessions are free of charge. However, there doesn't seem to be any available at this moment. Keep a lookout though, and it will pop up over the course of the year.

Hope it goes well, tyme

Re: Bpd treatment Perth

hi, I'm also in Perth, my daughter has BPD.   She has spent time in clinic and works with a psychiatrist in West Perth, happy to compare notes if you'd like to?

Does anyone know if there are any BPD sorry support groups in Perth for people living with BPD? thankyou

Re: Bpd treatment Perth

Hi @SallyVictoria

I'd say we're dealing with the same place. Not sure if we can say where on the forum due to their policies but there's not many options there.

My daughter has completed their instensive cbt as an inpatient recently. She did have some problems with it but I'm so glad they've changed their policies (she had to do it as an outpatient originally and she ended up in hospital for 3 days after the first session). I'm also glad that she did the 12 week dbt first as there were a few phone calls to me where I had to help her remember what she'd learnt in them.

I'm going to get her to ask her psychiatrist about redoing the dbt after her next inpatient stay in a couple of months. 12 weeks is really a bs time frame to get them to actually use what they learn. I'm looking at getting her some mbt or schema sessions once she does this next inpatient and dbt (assuming that they let them repeat). Hopefully she gets her approval for the disability as the extra money will help on paying for her therapy sessions. She also wants to try equine assisted therapy and possibly art therapy.

How has your experience in Perth been?

I use Helping Minds as extra support for me. The monthly phone calls are great but I've found that I've had to push for anything more.
